Camouflage training for South Carolina artists

South Carolina is growing quickly, especially along the coast and in the Upstate. Charleston and Mount Pleasant have a busy cosmetic surgery and med spa market, Greenville has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the Southeast, and Columbia combines a large university with major hospitals and a military community around Fort Jackson. Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head add seasonal residents and retirees.

South Carolina also has some of the most specific tattoo rules in the country, which matters a great deal for anyone thinking about camouflage. The SKINEAV 1:1 Zoom course teaches licensed South Carolina tattoo artists how to assess scars and stretch marks on the body, match pigment to each client and work safely on healed tissue, and it helps you think through how the state's rules shape the cases you can take.

Tuition: $2,997 USD for the live online 1:1 Zoom course taught from Canada, or $3,697 USD with the training kit shipped to the US. Payment plans are available, e.g. $500 deposit + 3 x $999. See the US course page for what is included.

How tattoo licensing works in South Carolina

South Carolina regulates tattooing under Title 44, Chapter 34 of the Code of Laws, administered by the South Carolina Department of Public Health, which took over the program from DHEC. The department licenses tattoo facilities, and a facility must hold a license before any tattooing is performed.

At a high level, the law requires a facility to commit to the department's standards, pass an initial inspection, provide a certified copy of a local ordinance authorizing tattooing where it is located, and renew its license yearly. A tattoo facility may only provide tattooing and may not run another retail business on the premises. Each tattoo artist must be at least 21, complete an approved bloodborne pathogens and tattoo infection control course every year, and hold current First Aid and adult CPR certification. The law also says tattooing may not be performed on skin with keloids or other unhealthy conditions, and makes it unlawful to tattoo any part of the head, face or neck.

Those last two points shape camouflage directly. Read the chapter in full and ask the Department of Public Health how it applies to the work you plan to do before you take clients. The SKINEAV Certificate of Completion is proof of training, not a South Carolina license or certification.

Where South Carolina camouflage clients are

  • Charleston and Mount Pleasant: a strong cosmetic surgery market and clients who travel in from the Lowcountry
  • Greenville and Spartanburg: the fast-growing Upstate, with very few camouflage specialists
  • Columbia: a university and hospital city with a large military community
  • Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand: retirees and seasonal residents
  • Hilton Head and Beaufort: a smaller, affluent coastal market

Because South Carolina law bars tattooing the head, face and neck, camouflage work there focuses on the body. Read tummy tuck and breast scar camouflage and stretch marks after pregnancy.

What South Carolina artists ask before enrolling

"Can I do camouflage inside my med spa?" South Carolina law says a tattoo facility may only provide tattooing and may not engage in other retail business. Ask the Department of Public Health how that applies before planning camouflage in a mixed-use space.

"A client wants a facial scar camouflaged. What should I do?" South Carolina law makes it unlawful for a tattoo artist to tattoo any part of the head, face or neck. Explain this to the client and ask the department if you are unsure. The course focuses on body scars and stretch marks, which is where most camouflage requests are anyway.

"Can I take the course before I turn 21?" You can learn the theory and practise on practice skin, but South Carolina sets 21 as the minimum age for tattoo artists. Plan your client work around that.

Scheduling from South Carolina

South Carolina is on Eastern Time, the same as Evelyn in Toronto, so there is no time difference, and both change clocks on the same dates. Coastal artists with summer-heavy calendars often book most of their sessions in the quieter winter months.

What a training week can look like from South Carolina

A typical week includes one session on theory, such as undertone, scar assessment and why keloid-prone or unstable skin is screened out, and one guided practice session on practice skin with live feedback from Evelyn. Between sessions you build a screening form that reflects the South Carolina rules and practise colour mixes for the skin tones you see most.

Your first camouflage clients in South Carolina

Most South Carolina graduates start with existing tattoo clients who have body scars or stretch marks, then build a small, consent-based portfolio. Because rules on location and services are strict, it pays to confirm everything with the department before you advertise. The course covers how to market camouflage honestly, without promising results.

How the course fits a South Carolina beauty business

Because South Carolina licenses tattoo facilities that may only provide tattooing, camouflage fits most naturally inside an existing licensed tattoo studio, as a specialist service for body scars and stretch marks.

The course covers the full basics of camouflage, learning on practice skin, theory, machine and ink, pigment chemistry basics, and the business side: finding your audience, building a pricing strategy you set yourself, and spacing sessions properly. You can add the training kit, you receive a SKINEAV Certificate of Completion, and you get six months of mentorship with Evelyn afterwards. It does not promise clients or income. It gives you a skill, a method and someone to ask when a real case comes in.

See the US course overview for the full curriculum and format.

Licensing note: the SKINEAV Certificate of Completion shows you finished Evelyn's training. It is not a state license, permit or registration. Before you tattoo anyone in the US, check and follow the rules of your state, county and city.
