Hands-on camouflage training at SKINEAV Academy

Camouflage training for Michigan artists

Michigan is SKINEAV's closest US neighbour. Detroit sits just across the river from Windsor, Ontario, and many Michigan clients and artists already know the Ontario beauty scene. Metro Detroit, from Royal Oak and Birmingham to Troy and Novi, has a large cosmetic surgery and med spa market. Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor add major hospital systems and university medical centres, and Lansing, Kalamazoo and Traverse City have growing PMU communities.

Even so, artists who can confidently camouflage a scar or stretch marks are still hard to find in most of the state. The SKINEAV 1:1 Zoom course teaches Michigan artists to assess each case honestly, mix custom pigment that matches the client's skin, and build colour gradually on healed tissue. It is live, private training with Evelyn, and it is taught from Canada over Zoom.

Tuition: $2,997 USD for the live online 1:1 Zoom course taught from Canada, or $3,697 USD with the training kit shipped to the US. Payment plans are available, e.g. $500 deposit + 3 x $999. See the US course page for what is included.

How body art licensing works in Michigan

Michigan licenses the place, not the person. Under Public Act 375 of 2010, tattooing, branding, microblading and body piercing must take place at a body art facility licensed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. MDHHS states clearly that individual artists are not licensed by the department; the facility is.

At a high level, a facility owner first completes a plan review with the local health department, then applies to MDHHS for the facility license, and local health departments carry out inspections. Temporary licenses exist for short events. Some cities add their own requirements: Detroit, for example, requires a city business license and Detroit Health Department approval on top of the state license, and lists cosmetic tattooing as body art.

Before you offer camouflage, confirm that the facility where you work is licensed and that your local health department is comfortable with the service. The SKINEAV Certificate of Completion is proof of training. It is not a Michigan license, and it does not replace a licensed facility.

Where Michigan camouflage clients are

  • Metro Detroit: Royal Oak, Birmingham, Troy, Novi, Dearborn and the Grosse Pointes, a large and diverse market
  • Grand Rapids: a growing medical city with a strong PMU community
  • Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti: a university medical centre and clients who research carefully
  • Lansing, Kalamazoo and Flint: mid-sized cities with very few camouflage specialists
  • Traverse City and northern Michigan: seasonal tourism and clients who travel for specialist work

Michigan clients often ask about burn and injury scars as well as surgical ones. Read injury and accident scar camouflage and stretch marks after pregnancy.

What Michigan artists ask before enrolling

"I rent a chair. Who needs the license?" In Michigan the facility holds the MDHHS license. If you rent a chair, check that the facility's license is current and talk to the owner before adding a new service.

"Is microblading experience useful for camouflage?" Yes. Michigan's law names microblading alongside tattooing, and microblading artists already understand pigment, depth and healing. Camouflage asks for different colour theory, body-area technique and a slower approach on scar tissue.

"Can I see Evelyn in person since Toronto is close?" The US course is fully online and live on Zoom, so you never need to cross the border. If you ever want in-person training in Ontario, ask on the free call.

Scheduling from Michigan

Almost all of Michigan is on Eastern Time, the same as Evelyn in Toronto, so there is no time difference. Four western Upper Peninsula counties that border Wisconsin use Central Time, one hour behind. Daylight saving changes on the same dates as Ontario.

What a training week can look like from Michigan

A Detroit or Grand Rapids student might book an early session before the studio opens and a second one on a quiet weekday afternoon. Sessions alternate between theory and live, guided practice on practice skin, with Evelyn correcting angle, depth and saturation on camera. You also build the paperwork Michigan facilities care about, such as consent forms, aftercare instructions and client records, and review them with Evelyn.

Your first camouflage clients in Michigan

Because Michigan licenses facilities, many graduates first offer camouflage in the studio or med spa where they already work, starting with existing clients. Building a relationship with a local plastic surgeon or burn clinic takes time and careful documentation. The course covers what to show them and how to talk about camouflage without overpromising.

How the course fits a Michigan beauty business

Because Michigan licenses the facility, adding camouflage is usually simplest inside a studio that already holds a current MDHHS body art facility license.

The course covers the full basics of camouflage, learning on practice skin, theory, machine and ink, pigment chemistry basics, and the business side: finding your audience, building a pricing strategy you set yourself, and spacing sessions properly. You can add the training kit, you receive a SKINEAV Certificate of Completion, and you get six months of mentorship with Evelyn afterwards. It does not promise clients or income. It gives you a skill, a method and someone to ask when a real case comes in.

See the US course overview for the full curriculum and format.

Licensing note: the SKINEAV Certificate of Completion shows you finished Evelyn's training. It is not a state license, permit or registration. Before you tattoo anyone in the US, check and follow the rules of your state, county and city.
