Camouflage training for DC artists

Washington, DC is a small city with a big beauty market. Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Logan Circle and the Wharf are full of brow studios and med spas, and the city's hospitals and the surgical practices of the surrounding suburbs serve patients from across the region. DC also has one of the largest communities of clients with brown and deep skin tones in the country, which makes careful colour matching especially important.

The SKINEAV 1:1 Zoom course teaches DC artists to assess scars and stretch marks honestly, mix custom pigment for every skin tone, and work safely on healed scar tissue, in private live sessions with Evelyn.

Tuition: $2,997 USD for the live online 1:1 Zoom course taught from Canada, or $3,697 USD with the training kit shipped to the US. Payment plans are available, e.g. $500 deposit + 3 x $999. See the US course page for what is included.

How body art licensing works in DC

DC licenses body artists individually and body art establishments separately. Under D.C. Code § 47-2853.76c, an applicant for a body artist license must show, among other things, at least 500 hours of training under a body artist licensed in the District, with an exemption for artists who can document at least 4,000 hours of practice over the two years before applying or equivalent experience the licensing board accepts. Section 47-2853.76b covers the regulation of body artists and establishments more broadly.

Establishments must meet DC Health's body art establishment regulations, which deal with sanitation, sterilization, safety and record keeping. Because DC is its own jurisdiction, a license from Maryland or Virginia does not let you work in the District.

Confirm with DC's licensing authorities which license covers camouflage before you offer it. The SKINEAV Certificate of Completion is proof of training. It is not a DC body artist license, and it does not count toward the 500 training hours.

Where DC camouflage clients are

  • Northwest DC: Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Cleveland Park and Friendship Heights, with many established PMU studios and med spas
  • Capitol Hill, Navy Yard and the Wharf: a younger professional market
  • Wards 7 and 8 and Northeast DC: communities where very few camouflage specialists work
  • Clients from the suburbs: Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland and Arlington and Alexandria in Virginia, who often come into the city

See the Maryland guide and Virginia guide if you also work outside the District. Read camouflage on deeper skin tones.

What Washington, DC artists ask before enrolling

"I'm licensed in Virginia but want to work in a DC studio. Is that allowed?" Not on a Virginia license alone. DC licenses body artists separately, so check DC's requirements, including any credit for experience, before working in the District.

"Most of my clients have deep skin. Does the course focus on that?" Yes. Undertone, colour matching on brown and deep skin, and recognising scars that should not be treated are central to the training.

"I'm still completing training hours under a DC artist. Should I wait?" You can learn theory and practise on practice skin now. Client work stays within your current status and under your supervising artist.

Scheduling from Washington, DC

DC and Toronto are both on Eastern Time, so there is no time difference. Many DC students book early morning sessions before their commute or a weekday afternoon between clients.

What a training week can look like from Washington, DC

A typical week mixes one theory session on undertone and scar assessment, often focused on brown and deep skin, with one live practice session on practice skin while Evelyn watches on camera. Between sessions you build a consultation form, a consent process and a photo setup that shows skin tones accurately.

Your first camouflage clients in Washington, DC

Most DC graduates start with clients who already trust them, build a small, consent-based portfolio and then introduce the service to dermatologists and plastic surgeons in the city and suburbs. The course covers honest consultations and record keeping, and never promises results.

How the course fits a Washington, DC beauty business

DC artists who already hold a body artist license and work in a licensed establishment can usually add camouflage as a new specialist service, after confirming with the licensing authority.

The course covers the full basics of camouflage, learning on practice skin, theory, machine and ink, pigment chemistry basics, and the business side: finding your audience, building a pricing strategy you set yourself, and spacing sessions properly. You can add the training kit, you receive a SKINEAV Certificate of Completion, and you get six months of mentorship with Evelyn afterwards. It does not promise clients or income. It gives you a skill, a method and someone to ask when a real case comes in.

See the US course overview for the full curriculum and format.

Licensing note: the SKINEAV Certificate of Completion shows you finished Evelyn's training. It is not a state license, permit or registration. Before you tattoo anyone in the US, check and follow the rules of your state, county and city.
