Camouflage training for New York artists

New York City has one of the most competitive beauty markets in the world. Clients have seen everything, compare portfolios closely and expect specialists. That is good news for camouflage: it is a niche many PMU artists have not learned properly, and New York clients actively search for artists who do it well.

The range of skin tones in New York is enormous, from very fair to very deep, with every undertone in between. The SKINEAV 1:1 Zoom course focuses on what makes camouflage look natural on any of them: custom colour matching, careful technique on scar tissue and an honest consultation.

Tuition: $2,997 USD for the live online 1:1 Zoom course taught from Canada, or $3,697 USD with the training kit shipped to the US. Payment plans are available, e.g. $500 deposit + 3 x $999. See the US course page for what is included.

How tattoo licensing works in New York

New York City and the rest of the state work differently. In the city, the NYC Health Code requires every tattoo artist to hold a license, and the applicant must first pass the Health Department's infection control course. The city states that this covers tattoo and permanent makeup artists, including people who perform microblading and scalp pigmentation, through the Infection Control Course for Tattoo and Permanent Makeup Artists.

Outside the city, Article 4-A of the Public Health Law covers body piercing and tattooing, and the New York State Department of Health points artists to local rules. Many county health departments run their own programs. For example, Nassau County and Suffolk County each have their own artist certification and establishment permits.

Check the rules for the exact city or county where you work. The SKINEAV Certificate of Completion is proof of training. It is not a New York license or certification.

Where New York camouflage clients are

  • Manhattan: the Upper East Side's concentration of plastic surgeons, and clients who expect a specialist
  • Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx: huge, diverse populations with every skin tone
  • Long Island and Westchester: busy suburban med spa markets
  • Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany: large cities with very few camouflage specialists

New York clients often ask about tummy tuck and breast scars, facelift scars and vitiligo. See vitiligo camouflage on skin of colour and facelift scar camouflage.

What New York artists ask before enrolling

"My clients compare me with the best artists in the city. How do I build a portfolio fast?" Carefully, not fast. The course covers photographing healed results in true colour and only showing work you are proud of. Read camouflage photography for artists.

"Can I train around a full appointment book?" Yes. One-on-one sessions are booked around your schedule, including early mornings.

Scheduling from New York

New York is on Eastern Time, the same as Evelyn in Toronto. There is no time difference, and both cities change clocks on the same dates.

How the course fits a New York beauty business

Because New York licensing depends on whether you are in the city or a county, most students add camouflage inside the studio or med spa where they already hold the right license. In a crowded market it gives you a specialist service many competitors do not offer.

The course covers the full basics of camouflage, learning on practice skin, theory, machine and ink, pigment chemistry basics, and the business side: finding your audience, building a pricing strategy you set yourself, and spacing sessions properly. You can add the training kit, you receive a SKINEAV Certificate of Completion, and you get six months of mentorship with Evelyn afterwards. It does not promise clients or income. It gives you a skill, a method and someone to ask when a real case comes in.

See the US course overview for the full curriculum and format.

Licensing note: the SKINEAV Certificate of Completion shows you finished Evelyn's training. It is not a state license, permit or registration. Before you tattoo anyone in the US, check and follow the rules of your state, county and city.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license to do camouflage tattooing in New York City?

The NYC Health Code requires all tattoo artists to be licensed, and the city says this includes permanent makeup artists. You must pass the city's infection control course first.

What about Long Island or upstate New York?

Outside NYC, county and city health departments set many of the rules. Nassau and Suffolk counties, for example, have their own certifications.

Is the SKINEAV certificate a New York license?

No. It is a Certificate of Completion for the training. It does not replace any city, county or state requirement.

What time are sessions for New York students?

New York and Toronto are both on Eastern Time, so there is no time difference.

Does the course cover very fair and very deep skin?

Yes. Colour matching across the full range of skin tones is central to the training.

Is the course live?

Yes. It is live, one-on-one with Evelyn on Zoom, with six months of mentorship afterwards.
