Camouflage training for North Carolina artists

North Carolina is one of the fastest-growing states in the country. Charlotte and the Research Triangle keep attracting young families and professionals, and the beauty industry has grown with them: brow and lip studios, med spas, and plastic surgery practices tied to some of the largest hospital systems in the Southeast.

With big medical centres come many surgical scars. Clients who have had heart surgery, C-sections, breast reconstruction or orthopaedic procedures often look for a cosmetic tattoo artist once their scars have fully healed. The SKINEAV 1:1 Zoom course teaches North Carolina artists how to assess those clients, mix custom pigment and work safely on healed scar tissue.

Tuition: $2,997 USD for the live online 1:1 Zoom course taught from Canada, or $3,697 USD with the training kit shipped to the US. Payment plans are available, e.g. $500 deposit + 3 x $999. See the US course page for what is included.

How tattooing permits work in North Carolina

North Carolina regulates tattooing through state law, with local health departments doing the work on the ground. Under G.S. 130A-283, no one may tattoo without a tattooing permit from the Department, and the law defines tattooing broadly as inserting permanent markings or coloration under the skin. Licensed physicians, and physician assistants and nurse practitioners working under a physician, are exempt within their normal practice.

The state's Environmental Health tattoo program sets the sanitation and infection control rules that tattoo artists and permanent color technologists must follow to keep their permit. At a high level, the rules in 15A NCAC 18A .3200 say permits are issued in the artist's own name for a specific establishment, are not transferable, require an inspection first, and are applied for through the local health department in advance of starting work.

Ask your county health department how the permit applies to camouflage before you take clients. The SKINEAV Certificate of Completion is proof of training, not a North Carolina tattooing permit.

Where North Carolina camouflage clients are

  • Charlotte: the state's largest city, with a busy cosmetic surgery and med spa market
  • Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill: major hospitals and universities, and clients who research carefully
  • Greensboro and Winston-Salem: a large Triad population with few camouflage specialists
  • Wilmington and Fayetteville: coastal and military communities, including clients with injury scars
  • Asheville: a strong independent tattoo culture

Read open-heart surgery scar camouflage and injury and accident scars for the kinds of cases you are likely to see.

What North Carolina artists ask before enrolling

"I'm a tattoo artist, not a PMU artist. Is this course for me?" Yes. Tattoo artists bring strong machine skills. What changes in camouflage is colour: you are matching living skin, not working with bold colour, and you need a more conservative approach on scars.

"Can I practise without live models at first?" Yes. The course starts on practice skin, so you build colour and depth control before you ever work on a client.

Scheduling from North Carolina

North Carolina is on Eastern Time, the same as Evelyn in Toronto. There is no time difference, and daylight saving changes on the same dates. Sessions are confirmed in writing either way.

How the course fits a North Carolina beauty business

Because a North Carolina tattooing permit is tied to you and to a specific establishment, most students add camouflage within the studio or practice where they already hold a permit.

The course covers the full basics of camouflage, learning on practice skin, theory, machine and ink, pigment chemistry basics, and the business side: finding your audience, building a pricing strategy you set yourself, and spacing sessions properly. You can add the training kit, you receive a SKINEAV Certificate of Completion, and you get six months of mentorship with Evelyn afterwards. It does not promise clients or income. It gives you a skill, a method and someone to ask when a real case comes in.

See the US course overview for the full curriculum and format.

Licensing note: the SKINEAV Certificate of Completion shows you finished Evelyn's training. It is not a state license, permit or registration. Before you tattoo anyone in the US, check and follow the rules of your state, county and city.
