Open heart surgery scars: is camouflage an option?
A sternotomy scar is a reminder of something serious. For some people, softening its colour helps them feel like themselves again.

Medical clearance comes first
If you have had cardiac surgery, talk to your cardiologist or family doctor before any cosmetic tattooing. Some heart conditions, blood thinners and implanted devices change what is appropriate. I will ask about your health and medications, and I will not work without your doctor’s agreement when it matters. See contraindications.
Why sternotomy scars are often not suitable
Scars down the centre of the chest are prone to becoming raised, thick or keloid. Camouflage tattooing does not flatten a scar, and tattooing a raised scar can make things worse. Many sternotomy scars are not candidates, and I would rather tell you that honestly.
Real results and real moments

When it may help
- The scar has healed flat and paler than the surrounding skin
- It is fully mature, often several years after surgery
- There is no history of keloids
- Your doctor has no concerns
Small pale scars from chest drains or pacemaker placement can also sometimes be blended, with the same checks.
What a first opinion looks like
Send a daylight photo straight on and one from the side to show any height, along with when you had surgery. I will tell you honestly whether it is worth an assessment. More on photos in how to photograph your scar.

Frequently asked questions
Can an open heart surgery scar be camouflaged?
Only some can. The scar must be flat, pale and fully mature, with no keloid history, and your doctor should agree. Many sternotomy scars are raised and not suitable.
Do I need my doctor’s permission?
Talk to your cardiologist or family doctor first, especially if you take blood thinners or have an implanted device.
Will camouflage flatten my scar?
No. Camouflage only changes colour. It does not change the height or texture of a scar.
What about small drain scars?
Small, flat, pale drain or device scars can sometimes be blended, with the same health checks.
