Tummy tuck scar camouflage: blending the line

An abdominoplasty scar is long, sits low and often heals lighter than the skin around it. Camouflage tattooing can reduce that contrast once the scar has fully matured.

Tummy tuck scars at SKINEAV, Vaughan

After a tummy tuck, most clients are happy with the shape and less happy with the line. It runs from hip to hip, sometimes with a scar around the belly button too, and as it matures it often turns paler than the surrounding skin. That is exactly the kind of contrast camouflage is designed for. You can see a real tummy tuck scar result from the clinic in the gallery.

How it works

I assess the scar, look at your undertone and mix a pigment for your skin. Then I place it only where the scar is lighter, so the line blends toward the colour around it. Long scars rarely have the same colour along their whole length: the centre may be paler, the ends darker or wider. I work section by section rather than treating the scar as one colour.

“We don’t fix texture, we fix color.”

Evelyn Alvares Vega, founder of SKINEAV

When is the scar ready?

Only once it is fully healed and mature. Surgical scars keep changing for many months, often a year or more, and every body is different. If the scar is still pink, red, tight, itchy or raised, it is too early. Your surgeon is the right person to confirm that the scar has settled. Read more in how long to wait after surgery.

What camouflage can and cannot change

  • It can reduce colour contrast on a flat, pale scar.
  • It cannot flatten a raised scar, fill a dent or remove stretch marks left above the incision line.
  • It can be combined with stretch mark camouflage on the remaining abdomen in a separate plan, when suitable.
  • Darker sections of a scar are assessed separately, because adding pigment to darker skin can make it more visible.

Sessions and healing

Many tummy tuck scars need more than one session, several weeks apart. After a session the area can look darker or pinker for a while before the colour settles. Keep it clean, follow your aftercare instructions, and keep it out of the sun. Because the scar sits under the waistband, friction from tight clothing is something to plan around for the first days.

Frequently asked questions

How long after a tummy tuck can I get scar camouflage?

Only once the scar is fully healed and mature, which often takes a year or more. Your surgeon should confirm it has settled.

Can you camouflage the belly button scar too?

Often yes, if it is healed, flat and lighter than the skin. It is assessed at the same consultation.

Will it remove the scar?

No. Camouflage reduces colour contrast so the scar can look less noticeable. Texture and shape stay the same.

Can stretch marks above the scar be treated?

Stretch marks that have faded to white or silver can often be camouflaged as part of a separate plan.
