Surgical scars · Timing
How long after surgery can you camouflage a scar?
The honest answer is: when the scar has stopped changing. Here is how to recognise that point, and why starting early does not help.

It is the question I hear most from surgical clients. You have waited for the surgery, waited to heal, and now you want the scar to stop drawing attention. I understand. But camouflage on a scar that is still maturing is like painting a wall that is still drying.
Why scars need time
After surgery, the body keeps remodelling the scar for a long time. Colour changes from red or pink toward a paler tone. Texture softens. Width can change. If pigment is placed while that is still happening, the scar can keep changing around it and the match no longer fits.
“We don’t fix texture, we fix color.”

Signs a scar is still maturing
- It is pink, red or purple
- It feels tight, itchy or tender
- It is raised or firmer than it was a few months ago
- Its colour or width is still changing month to month
Real results and real moments

Signs a scar may be ready
- Its colour has been stable for a long time, usually pale
- It is soft and flat or nearly flat
- It is not painful or itchy
- Your surgeon is comfortable that healing is complete
For many people this takes a year or more, but it varies widely. Your surgeon knows your case. I always recommend checking with them.

Protect the scar from the sun, follow your surgeon's scar care advice, and take photos every couple of months in the same light. Those photos help me see whether the scar has settled. When you are ready, send them with a free photo assessment.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get camouflage six months after surgery?
Only if the scar has fully matured, which is often not the case at six months. Your surgeon and a camouflage artist should both agree it has settled.
What happens if camouflage is done too early?
The scar can keep changing in colour and texture, so the match may no longer fit as it matures.
