Thyroidectomy and neck scar camouflage: an honest guide
A thyroid surgery scar sits in one of the most visible places on the body. Here is how I decide whether camouflage can help.

Why neck scars bother people
A thyroidectomy scar usually runs across the lower front of the neck, often in a natural crease. Surgeons place it there so it hides well, and many heal into a fine line. But some heal paler than the skin around them, and a pale line on the neck shows in every open collar, every photo and every conversation.
Camouflage tattooing does not change the scar’s texture. What it can do is bring colour back into a flat, pale scar so the eye stops landing on it.
Which neck scars may suit camouflage
- Flat scars that are lighter than the surrounding skin
- Scars that are fully mature: no longer pink, red or tender
- Skin that is not under active treatment in that area
Scars that are raised, thickened, red or still changing are usually not suitable. Neither are keloids. Read raised vs flat scars and keloid scars and tattooing for the details.
Real results and real moments

How long to wait after thyroid surgery
Most surgical scars need many months to settle, and many need a year or more before the colour stops changing. Pink or red means the scar is still active. I will only work on a neck scar once it has matured and your surgeon or doctor has no concerns. The general timing guide is in how long to wait after surgery.
Colour matching on the neck
Neck skin changes tone through the year and is often a slightly different colour from the face and chest. That is why I mix a custom formula and test it on your skin first, rather than choosing from a fixed palette. More on that in how skin colour matching works.

Healing and sun on the neck
The neck is thin-skinned and often exposed. In the first days keep the area clean, avoid tight collars and scarves that rub, and keep it out of the sun. Long-term, daily sunscreen helps the scar and the surrounding skin age together. Full steps are in camouflage tattoo aftercare.
Getting a first opinion from Vaughan or anywhere in the GTA
Send a daylight photo straight on, one at an angle to show any height, and a note on when you had surgery. I will give you an honest first answer. If it looks suitable, the next step is an in-clinic assessment and colour test in Vaughan.
Frequently asked questions
Can a thyroidectomy scar be camouflaged?
Often, if the scar is flat, pale and fully mature. Raised, red or keloid scars are usually not suitable for camouflage tattooing.
How long after thyroid surgery can I have scar camouflage?
The scar must be mature, which often takes a year or longer, and your surgeon or doctor should have no concerns.
Will camouflage make my neck scar flat?
No. Camouflage works on colour, not texture. It can make a pale scar far less noticeable, but it does not change its surface.
Do you see clients from Toronto for neck scars?
Yes. The clinic is in Vaughan and clients come from across Toronto and the GTA. You can start with a free phone consult or a photo.
