Skin anatomy basics for camouflage artists
You cannot place pigment well in skin you do not understand. These are the foundations taught on day one at SKINEAV Academy.

The layers that matter
Skin has an outer layer that constantly renews itself and a deeper supporting layer beneath it. Pigment placed too shallow is shed as the outer layer renews. Pigment placed too deep can spread and look blurred or grey. Camouflage depends on placing pigment consistently in the right zone.
“In the beginning, your portfolio is everything. People need to see your work before they trust you with their skin.”
Evelyn Alvares Vega, SKINEAV Academy
How scars change the picture
Scar tissue replaces normal skin after deep injury. It is organised differently and often has fewer of the structures normal skin has. It can be thicker, thinner, firmer or less elastic, so the same hand pressure lands differently. See scar tissue and pigment retention.

How stretch marks differ
Stretch marks form when skin stretches faster than it can adapt. Mature marks are often thinner and paler than the skin around them. They can be delicate, so a light, controlled approach matters.
How training works
- Free callTalk through your goals, the right format and current offers.
- Reserve your seatIn person in Vaughan or live online via Zoom.
- 3 intensive daysColour theory, technique and supervised practice with Evelyn.
- Six months of mentorshipFeedback on your work while you build your business.
Skin types and tones
Thickness, oiliness, sun damage and skin tone all affect how pigment heals. Deeper skin tones need particular care with irritation. Mature skin can be thinner.
| Skin situation | What to adjust |
|---|---|
| Thin or mature skin | Lighter pressure, conservative passes |
| Scar tissue | Assess texture; expect uneven retention |
| Stretch marks | Precise, line-by-line work |
| Darker skin prone to darkening | Conservative plan, wider spacing |
Why this is taught hands-on
Reading about depth does not teach your hand. Supervised practice, first on practice skin and then on live models in person, is where the theory becomes skill. That is the structure of the SKINEAV courses.
Frequently asked questions
Why does pigment depth matter so much in camouflage?
Too shallow and the pigment is shed as skin renews; too deep and it can blur or look grey.
Is skin anatomy covered in SKINEAV courses?
Yes. Skin and scar assessment are core parts of the curriculum.
