Dark scars and camouflage: an honest look

Pale scars are the classic camouflage case. Darker scars are harder. Some can still be softened, carefully and case by case.

Dark scars at SKINEAV, Vaughan

Many camouflage guides say darker scars cannot be treated. The reality is more nuanced, and I prefer to explain it honestly.

Why darker scars are harder

Camouflage adds pigment. Adding pigment to an area that is already darker than your skin can make it more visible, not less. Lightening skin with pigment is much harder than filling in a pale area. That is why dark scars need a very careful assessment.

“We don’t fix texture, we fix color.”

Evelyn Alvares Vega, founder of SKINEAV

When a darker scar may still be suitable

Some scars have a darker outline with a paler centre, or show a colour that is different from your skin rather than simply deeper. In some of these cases, a carefully built formula can reduce the contrast. You can see one darker scar result from SKINEAV in the video on this page.

When to wait or see a dermatologist

  • Scars that are still red, purple or darkening are still maturing
  • Darkening after inflammation often fades with time and dermatological care
  • Any mark that is new, changing, raised or bleeding should be checked by a doctor first

The assessment

I look at the scar in daylight, compare it with the skin around it at several points and do a colour test. If I think pigment would make it more noticeable, I will tell you, and suggest who to see instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can camouflage tattooing cover a dark scar?

Some darker scars can be softened with a carefully built formula, but they are harder than pale scars and are assessed individually.

Why are dark scars harder to camouflage?

Adding pigment to an area already darker than your skin can make it more visible. Pale areas are easier to fill in.
