Camouflage tattoo vs regular tattoo: the real differences

Both place pigment in the skin. Almost everything else is different: the goal, the colours, the technique and the training.

Camouflage vs regular tattoo at SKINEAV, Vaughan

People sometimes ask whether they could just go to any tattoo studio for their scar. It is a fair question. Here is how the two crafts differ.

The goal

A decorative tattoo is meant to be seen. A camouflage tattoo is meant to be overlooked. Success in camouflage is when nobody notices the area at all.

“We don’t fix texture, we fix color.”

Evelyn Alvares Vega, founder of SKINEAV

Colour

Decorative work uses strong, stable inks that are easy to see. Camouflage uses skin-tone pigments that I mix for each client, building the right undertone as much as the right depth. More in how skin colour matching works.

Technique

Camouflage is precise, light work placed only where the skin is lighter. On scar tissue, depth and hand speed matter even more, because scar tissue behaves differently from normal skin.

Assessment

A camouflage artist spends a lot of time deciding whether to tattoo at all: is the scar mature, is it raised, is the vitiligo stable, does the client need to see a doctor first. Saying no is part of the job.

Covering a scar with a design

Some people choose a decorative tattoo to cover or incorporate a scar, and that can be a beautiful choice. It is simply a different goal. If you want the skin to look like skin, camouflage is the approach. See can you tattoo over stretch marks?

Frequently asked questions

Is a camouflage tattoo a real tattoo?

Yes. Pigment is placed in the skin. The difference is the goal, the colours and the technique.

Can any tattoo artist do scar camouflage?

Camouflage needs specific training in colour matching and scar assessment. Ask about an artist’s healed camouflage results.
