How to choose a scar camouflage artist: 8 questions
Before you book scar or stretch mark camouflage in Toronto or the GTA, ask these eight questions. Training, honesty about texture, colour testing, healing and aftercare.
Camouflage tattooing is placed in your skin, so who you choose matters more than price or proximity. These are the questions we would ask, as artists and educators, before trusting anyone with a scar, stretch marks or vitiligo.
1. How were you trained, and do you still train?
Camouflage is a specialty beyond decorative tattooing or brows. Ask where the artist trained and whether that included supervised work on live models. Evelyn is blunt about this one: “You can’t build proper technique without proper guidance.”
2. Will you tell me what camouflage cannot do?
A good artist explains limits before benefits. Camouflage softens colour contrast. It doesn’t change texture, flatten raised scars or make marks vanish. As Evelyn puts it: “We don’t fix texture, we fix color.” Be cautious of anyone who promises to erase a scar.
3. Do you test colour on my skin first?
Pigment should be custom-blended for your tone and undertone and tested against your skin, not chosen from a chart.
4. Can I see healed results on skin like mine?
Ask for healed photos, not only fresh ones, on similar skin tones and similar marks. Real photos have real lighting and real skin.
5. Will you tell me if I’m not a candidate?
Red or purple stretch marks, scars that are still healing, keloids and active vitiligo are common reasons to wait. An artist who says “not yet” is protecting you.
6. What does healing look like, and when do we review it?
Results are judged once healed. Evelyn’s guide is that healing “can take anywhere between six weeks to three months.” Be wary of promises of an immediate result.
7. What aftercare will I get, in writing?
Results depend heavily on aftercare. You should leave with clear written instructions and a way to ask questions while you heal.
8. Is the studio inspected and hygienic?
In Ontario, tattoo businesses are personal service settings subject to public health inspection. Single-use needles, clean surfaces and a calm, private room are the baseline.

Quick answers
Is the cheapest option a good idea?
Price matters, but this is pigment in your skin. Training, honesty and healed results matter more.
Should a camouflage artist promise a number of sessions?
No. They can estimate, but the number depends on your skin, the mark and how you heal.
“In the beginning, your portfolio is everything. People need to see your work before they trust you with their skin.”
