Vitiligo on the hands, lips and face: what to know
These are the places people most want to treat, and some of the most challenging places to camouflage. Here is an honest look at why.

Vitiligo on the hands and face is visible every day, in every conversation. It makes sense that these areas come up first. I want you to understand the challenges before you decide.
Hands and fingers
Hands are used constantly, washed often and exposed to sun all year. Pigment in this skin can soften faster. Skin over the knuckles and fingertips moves and creases. Vitiligo on the hands can also be less stable than elsewhere. I assess hands very carefully and often recommend starting somewhere else, if at all.
“We don’t fix texture, we fix color.”

Lips
Lip colour is not skin colour. Matching it requires a different approach, and lips are sensitive. Lip vitiligo is assessed individually.

Face
The face changes colour with sun, flushing and seasons, and it is where any mismatch is most visible. I am conservative with facial vitiligo and discuss it in depth before anything is done.

Areas that are often more predictable
Stable patches on the body, such as the torso, arms or legs, are often easier to match and more predictable over time. Many clients start there.
Your dermatologist first
Before any vitiligo camouflage, speak with your dermatologist about stability and treatment options. Camouflage is cosmetic and does not treat the condition. See is my vitiligo stable?
Frequently asked questions
Can vitiligo on hands be tattooed?
It is assessed very carefully. Hands change, are sun-exposed and move a lot, so results can be less predictable.
Does camouflage treat vitiligo?
No. It is a cosmetic option for stable patches and does not treat the condition.
