Camouflage machines and needles: beginner basics

New students often worry about buying the "right" machine. Consistency of technique matters far more. Here are the basics.

Machines & needles basics at SKINEAV, Vaughan

The machine

Camouflage is usually done with a rotary-style cosmetic tattoo machine, often a pen-style device, with adjustable stroke and speed. What matters most is that it runs smoothly and consistently and that you know it well.

“In the beginning, your portfolio is everything. People need to see your work before they trust you with their skin.”

Evelyn Alvares Vega, SKINEAV Academy

Needles and cartridges

Single-use, sterile cartridges are standard practice. Different needle groupings place pigment in different patterns: some for fine lines, some for softer shading across an area. Camouflage often uses configurations that give a soft, even deposit.

Speed, angle and hand pressure

Three variables you control on every pass:

  • Machine speed: affects how much pigment is deposited and how much trauma the skin receives.
  • Hand speed: too slow overworks the skin; too fast leaves gaps.
  • Angle and pressure: affect depth, especially on uneven scar tissue.

A beginner with a mid-range machine and steady technique will get better results than a beginner with an expensive machine and inconsistent hands.
