Camouflage tattoo and breastfeeding: why we wait

I ask every pregnant or breastfeeding client to wait. Here is the reasoning, and how to use the waiting time well.

Waiting until after breastfeeding at SKINEAV, Vaughan

Mothers are some of my most motivated clients. Stretch marks and C-section scars arrive at a time when your body has done something huge, and it is natural to want to feel like yourself again. I still ask you to wait until you have finished breastfeeding. Here is why.

Caution first

Camouflage tattooing places pigment in the skin. While you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the cautious approach used across the cosmetic tattoo field is to postpone elective procedures. If in doubt, speak with your doctor or midwife. I would always choose caution over speed.

“We don’t fix texture, we fix color.”

Evelyn Alvares Vega, founder of SKINEAV

Your skin is still changing

Pregnancy and the months after it bring big changes in hormones, weight and skin. Some women notice darker patches, a darker line on the abdomen, or skin tone shifts. Stretch marks may still be red or purple and slowly maturing. If I match pigment to your skin now, the match may not fit the skin you have a year from now.

Scars and stretch marks need to mature

A C-section scar needs to be fully healed and mature. Stretch marks need to fade to white or silver before they suit camouflage. Both often take many months anyway, so waiting until after breastfeeding usually fits the natural timeline.
